Fluoride, a naturally occurring element, has proven to be effective in drastically lowering the rate of tooth decay when present in water consumed regularly. Fluoride fortifies tooth enamel, preventing acidic plaque from penetrating the surfaces of teeth. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Dental Association, water fluoridation has reduced tooth decay in children by 60 percent. On top of drinking fluoridated water, fluoride treatments may be prescribed to further increase a child’s resistance to cavities.
Here at Harbor Kids Dental, we apply fluoride treatments after each bi-annual cleaning. These treatments are available in a variety of formats, including gels and foams. They are necessary because sometimes regular brushing, a well-balanced diet and fluoridated water consumption are not enough to protect against tooth decay in the Aberdeen, and Olympia, Washington, areas.
Fluoride Treatments Prevent Tooth Decay
If the child exhibits any of the following symptoms, we may prescribe additional fluoride treatments in an effort to prevent tooth decay:
●Signs of frequent and recent tooth decay
●Family history of a high rate of tooth decay
●Teeth with exposed roots and/or pits on the top surface
In addition to professional or prescription fluoride treatments, the pediatric dentistry staff at Harbor Kids Dental in Aberdeen, and Olympia, Washington, will ensure your child is using fluoridated toothpaste during their normal dental hygiene routine. Children under age 2 normally should not use fluoridated toothpaste, but at your personal consultation, our staff can instruct you on the specific measures intended to work most effectively for your child.
